Knitting in the News: Natural Fibers, Knit Brains and a Talk about Creativity

Thursday January 1, 2009
The news this week is a bit of a grab bag, with another plea for knit breasts for breastfeeding moms and the coming of a year focused on natural fibers.

2009 is officially the International Year of Natural Fibers, so declared by the United Nations. The idea is to spotlight industries that represent a $40 billion market around the world, with about 25 million tons of cotton and 2.2 million tons of wool produced annually, not to mention other natural fibers. The year will officially kick off later in January and will focus on promoting natural fibers as a green alternative, promoting more eco-friendly production such as through the use of integrated pest management, improving the conditions for poor fiber workers by opening up new markets, and providing research funding for projects like more drought-resistant fiber plants.

If you're looking for some inspiration in the new year, check out Kim Werker's interview with sci-fi superstar Joss Whedon over at CrochetMe. It's a funny, cool, wide-ranging interview covering such things as the feud between knitters and crocheters, art vs. craft, the crafty resurgence and the best crafty gifts he's received. It's well worth reading, and the story behind how the interview came about it actually pretty cool, too.

Finally, we've heard about a lot of strange things being knit (see knit breasts, above), but how about knit brains? Apparently there are lots of people, not just knitters, making anatomically correct brain art. If that doesn't get your creative juices flowing, I'm not sure what will.
