On this Christmas Day it feels appropriate to start with the story of a really big knitting gift. Kim Aaron of West Virginia has spent the last two years knitting a Tom Baker Dr. Who scarf for her son, which he recently received as a Hanukkah present. She admits not every stitch of the 12-foot long scarf was made with love, and was worried about ever finishing since the scarf is literally bigger than she is, but she made it. Incidentally if you want to make one there's lots of information and several patterns here.

Speaking of extreme feats of knitting, the Boston Herald recently took a look at extreme knitters, that is people who don't knit what we'd consider normal objects like sweaters and socks. Instead, they're making holiday meals, projects out of plastic bags and giant American flags. Making unconventional knits is a great way to get people talking and thinking about the craft in a new way, these artists say.

If you made some of your holiday gifts this year, you're far from alone. The New York Times reports that this season has been great for craft stores as people look to save money by making gifts. It's also been a boom time for sellers of things handmade, such as people on Etsy, where more than $10 million in goods were sold last month.

Finally, to bring it back to knitting resolutions, the knitting columnist at the Anchorage Daily News explains why this is the year you should join The Knitting Guild Association. And if you're planning to learn to knit in the next year you might want to try KNiiTTiiNG, a game being developed for the Nintendo Wii. Designed by an artist and engineer turned behavioral scientist, the game uses a sort of "Guitar Hero" interface to take players through knitting a virtual object, but should help them learn to knit in the real world as well.
