Do You Buy Handmade?

Wednesday December 3, 2008
I've been watching this PBS series, Craft in America this week, which, along with crafting for the holidays has got me thinking about supporting artisans and craftsters by buying more handmade things. It's so easy for us these days to visit Etsy or a local shop and find wonderful handmade things, and the Internet makes it easier than ever to connect to individual artists should you want to commission a piece.

I get the feeling that people are buying more handmade things than they might have in the recent past, but I don't know if that's really true. So this week I'd like to know if you buy handmade, whether it's clothing, candles or handspun yarn.

And if your buying habits when it comes to things homemade have changed recently, I'd love to hear about it in the comments.

With Etsy, this year I’m planning on buying a lot more handmade gifts. It is a great way to support artisans and you definitely get something unique.

For sure I am! My husband and I considered getting Tiffany wedding rings but instead we got artisan rings by a local man named Chris Ploof.

And for Christmas this year we subscribed his mother to a soap of the month club done by a small farm in NY, not too far from where they live.

There are definitely plenty of options out there. Many are really high quality items too, nothing that looks handmade.

I guess the big thing for me is that I have so little money these days that I would rather buy the quality artisan item than the Walmart mass market replica.

Our very small congregation had a first annual handmade holiday gift table. The crafters among us each produced and priced our goods, sales were brisk, and we raised a nice amount of money for our building fund.

I buy handmade as much as possible. Handmade always last longer and brings a little of the spirit of the crafter’s heart to yours. Handmade pieces have more substance in every way.
