Do You Follow Fashion in Your Knitting?

Wednesday November 12, 2008
I don't get a chance to listen to the knitting podcasts as often as I'd like, but I did listen to an episode of Lion Brands' YarnCraft awhile back that I found interesting. It was all about the trends in fashion that can be used in knitting.

Some of the trends they noted include:
  • vibrant colors and jewel tones
  • leggings and leg-warmers
  • long coats and sweaters
  • lots of color and pattern plays, including plaids, Fair Isle and intarsia
  • natural inspiration in color, texture and fiber
Another big trend I've noticed is the larger scale of a lot of knit items: bulky yarns seem to be making a comeback in some quarters, as well as those super-long scarves, sweaters and coats.

All of which got me wondering how much the average knitter (not that you all are in any way average!) pays attention to such trends when picking projects to knit or designing their own projects. I'll admit to having put a lot of bulky yarn on the needles lately (you'll start seeing the results in a crop of new patterns later this week), but for the most part I knit what I like and what I think you will like as well, without a lot of thought to what's on the runway.

What do you think? Do you look to fashion to decide what to knit, or do you just pick patterns you like, no matter what?

some might distinguish “fashion” from “style” … fashion comes and goes, usually seasonally … style is a personal preference that expresses the wearers’ personality
… my style might have bits of this season’s fashion added into it … i fit fashion into my style

i knit whatever strikes my fancy from the dozens of pattern books i own and the dozens of knitting websites i visit regularly. a lot (most, actually) of my knitting is for grandchildren or charity, so i knit a lot of socks, mittens, scarves, hats, etc. and i don’t pay any attention at all to fashion. i liked what the previous poster said about style, though … now that i think about it, my “style” probably influences all of my knitting.

I knit what I like and what looks good on me, I prefer the big ski type sweaters and sweaater coats. Long scarfs are the best to stay warm, always were and always will be. Been knitting this way for over 30 years and I only do something trendy when one of the kids asks (I change the patterns a bit also on the trendy anyway if I don’t think it will look right on the body I am knitting for, LOL)

Bulky yarns are what I learned on I think we use to call them rug yarn, and large needles so that I could see the stitches, at least that is what my granny said. Now I use everything from size 10 cotton to super bulky.

As to style people are not built like models, they should wear what looks good on them, no matter what the trends are.

I have been knitting for about 55 years now and still love it. I think I knit to my “style” rather than to the latest fashion although I do adapt patterns to take the latest trends into consideration. Most of the time I knit for my family and grandchildren, who although they live in Australia, (it gets very cold in the area they live) and they love getting a sack of knitting from Grandma.
