Picking Up Stitches
Tuesday September 23, 2008
I know a lot of knitters find picking up stitches a chore, but I really like to do it, particularly as a technique to take your knitting into three dimensions without having to sew a seam later.
This is probably my favorite method for making bag and bowls, starting by knitting a base, then picking up stitches on the other three sides and knitting the body of the bag in the round. In fact, I'm doing this right now on a felted Halloween goodie bag project, which I should be able to share with you later this week.
Is there a knitting skill most people think is a chore that you actually enjoy? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I, also, like to pick up stitches. I learned it while I was making socks. It’s impressive without really being hard to do.
I don’t mind sewing up seams. I belong to a group that knits for charity and most of the women spend *a lot* of time trying to figure out how they can get out of seaming by knitting various items in the round. I have sewn practically my whole life, so I just don’t see it as a chore.
