Knitting in the News: Charities and Events from the UK
Thursday September 4, 2008
There wasn't a lot of knitting in the news this week, and what I could find all came from England. If you're in London, there are a lot of crafty events happening this fall, letting knitters and others show off their skills in public. There's also a prediction here that cross stitch is going to be the new knitting. What do you think?
And as usual there are stories about knitters doing good for others, such as those knitting tiny hats for The Big Knit, which I mentioned a few days ago, and folks working on slightly larger baby hats for the Knit One, Save One campaign. Forecasters say this winter is going to be a particularly harsh one in the UK, so every little bit people can do to help others stay warm is a good thing.
Have you seen a story about knitting in the news (online or off)? Let me know about it.

If cross stitch is going to make a comeback then I am all set, having at least 59 UFOs stashed somewhere in my sewing room just dying to see the light of day once more!
I think I’ll let the cross stitch craze pass me by this time. I did tons of it in the 80’s and 90’s.
I love seeing cross stitch being done. I myself have never tried it. I don’t think my dh would like another hobby just now. Maybe one day I will give it a try.
I love cross stitch. I did the Last Supper for a familt member. I have created some of my own designs as well. It’s hard to find a good cross stitch pattern anymore. But I have many projects at various stages to keep me busy.
I did counted cross-stitch in the 80’s too. I made lots of ornaments and some framed pieces and pillow inserts. It was easy to do and one could make up one’s own designs. But the larger more detailed pieces took a long time to finish.
I discovered knitting and love it. Although crocheting goes a little faster, there is something very satisfying about finishing something useable with knitting. I love making scarves for family members. There is still a lot for me to learn–so, it doesn’t bore me. There is much room for personal creativity. I don’t think cross-stitching can replace knitting. Knitting is more practical as well!
I’ve been knitting for four years now. Several knitting shops have closed in Minneapolis - St Paul due to the economy and no more need for eyelash scarves. Cross stitching was my passion for over 25+ years. My relatives and I have all run out of wall space years ago. With knitting, you can make lots of wearable items and nothing needs to be framed. I still X stitch on occasion to finish a few precious items.
