Wordless Wednesday: Getting Better All The Time

Anyone who has followed this page for very long will know that I can't crochet. My grandmother, who taught me how to knit and shared her love of all things crafty, never could get crochet to take on me.

But something about my recent birthday motivated me to try again, the results of which you can see above. The red swatch was my first attempt. Clearly I wasn't too sure where to turn the work, but things are improving.

I share these so we can all get a laugh, but also to show new knitters that yes, your first attempts will be ugly, slow and frustrating, but with a little time and practice you'll feel a lot more comfortable and confident and your work will actually start looking like something. And if your first attempts are beautiful, I don't want to hear about it.

Gee, those pieces look familiar! There are some similar swatches in my bag, too. However, they are knitted pieces. My mother taught me to knit and crochet when I was in my teens (many years ago)and for the longest time, crocheting was my favorite past time: it’s fast and easy. Knitting took too long and the patterns seemed so complicated. However, today I am knitting socks, hats and mittens on DPNs and circular needles; crochet has taken a back seat. I, too, will have to try again…at some time…but for now, bring on the knitted work!

I am 70 and have been crocheting and knitting for 60 yrs. Crocheting is my favorite, no dropped stitches to worry about. One hint: as you finish the last stitch on a row, mark it with a safety pin, then crochet one, two, how many turn chains the pattern calls for and then when you start your next row, you know exactly where to start your first stitch.

Good Luck

I sure can relate to those swatches. I agree that crochet is somewhat fiddly on the return but once ya get the hang of it wow. Yup it take practice like everything that we try new. Good luck on your crocheting. It will get better.
