Charity Spotlight: The Big Knit
Sunday August 31, 2008
One of my favorite charity projects of the year, which is in full swing again, is The Big Knit from the UK's Innocent Drinks. I love this one for a bunch of reasons. It's a drive for little tiny hats that are put on the smoothie bottles in Sainsburys stores throughout the UK.
Then when people buy the smoothies that come in bottles with hats, 50 pence is donated to Age Concern, a charity that helps elderly people stay warm during the winter. It provides blankets, hot meals and help for seniors to keep their homes warm.
The tiny hats are completely adorable and quick to knit, and the drive raised more than 200,000 pounds last year to help protect the UK's elderly. It's estimated that 25,000 people die from the cold each year, so that money makes a big difference.
The project runs through October 17, so even knitters this side of the pond have a chance to make a difference if they like.
