Mini Knitting

Thursday August 21, 2008
Have you ever thought of knitting in miniature? Leslie Shepherd, About.com's Guide to Miniatures, has some great tips for knitting super-small clothes and other items for doll houses.

She provides a great overview of the tools you need to get started and great reminders such as working with clean hands and being careful not to make mistakes, since dropped stitches are difficult to pick up on such a small scale.

She's also got a great look at a seller of miniature knitting tools and patterns, should you want to start on a smaller version of knitting yourself.

Have you ever knit on a tiny scale? I'd love to hear about it!

My mom used to knit all of the clothes for our barbie dolls and such. She had pattern books all over the place and we constantly were saying “Mom my doll needs such-and-such”. She was always very willing to accomodate our Barbies every need and whim!

My mother taught me to knit when I was 15 years old. I knitted a terracotta cardigan with fancy cuffs made of cables and twists, it was my pride and joy. From then on, I knitted anything and everything, baby clothes, ladies jumpers and much more. I especially liked Aran knitting.

My mother discovered miniature knitting in 1993 and 6 years ago I decided to try my hand at this intricate art. I started by making a dress, it took what seemed like a lifetime to make it, but my mam said I’d taken to it like a duck to water! I was determined to persevere with it, that was the beginning of my fascination with miniature knitting.

Today I am a successful miniature knitter and have sold hundreds of items across the world. I have recently begun to knit miniature toys such as teddies, dolls, and many others. Please visit my new website: http://www.middisminiknits.co.uk
