Charity Spotlight: Knits for Iowa

Thursday July 24, 2008
There's a soft spot in my heart for Iowa, since I was born there, but this is a charity knitting drive I think anyone, anywhere could get behind.

Cottage Creations of Carpenter, Iowa, is collecting knit items to be distributed to families who lost their homes in the recent flooding in Iowa and a tornado that hit Parkersburg around the same time. In particular, they're looking for the following items:
  • mittens
  • caps
  • scarves
  • afghans
  • prayer shawls
  • baby blankets
  • dishcloths
  • socks
  • infants, children’s and adult sweaters
Items will be accepted until November 1 and may be mailed to:
Cottage Creations
At the Farm on Deer Creek
Carpenter, Iowa 50462

or, if using a delivery service (UPS, FedEx):
Carol Anderson
4562 Zinnia Ave.
St. Ansgar, IA 50472

Carol asks that knitters also include a card with the name of the item and size, if applicable, as well as fiber content and, if desired, your name and any words of encouragement you'd like to send to the people of Iowa. She also suggests that items be machine washable and dryable whenever possible.

For more information, check out her full note posted over at Nature Knitter. I'm sure the people of Iowa thank you for thinking of them.

lOOKING FOR THE RIGHT ADDRESS FOR COTTAGE CREATIONS. WHY?
I have a book pub by cottage creations in Carpenter, Iowa. It’s called “Wisconsin Winter Socks” and the author is Carol Anderson. Pub date 1986 so there is no email to write to you. I found this under Yahoo website and decided to see if I have the right address.
I have tried some of the scarves and hats but he socks - forget it. I am a retired Am senior(male) now living in Cairo, Egypt. My question is about joining two different colors when making a scarf. After joining the main color with the secondary color, what do you to with the two small tails that are left and sticking out???????
I have pondered over this for some time with no solution. Can you give me some pointers about this?

Thanks!

I’ll send this to your e-mail, too, just in case. I only have those mailing addresses for Carol, not an e-mail, but someone else might be able to help with that.

And getting rid of the strings on the side of the scarf is done by weaving in the ends: http://knitting.about.com/od/learntoknit/a/weaving_in.htm
