Stripey Stocking Cap
Sunday July 20, 2008
I'm still feeling a little Christmasy even though the weather is as warm as it's been all summer, so I thought I'd share one more Christmas in July pattern with you.
This Striped Stocking Hat is a long version of Santa's hat, with stripes. It reminds me of a candy cane and I think of it as the perfect hat to wear on Christmas morning or to a holiday party.
Of course if you like the style but not the candy-striped effect, you can knit it in any color or combination of colors that you like (maybe a Harry-Potter inspired house hat for Halloween?). Knitting a stocking hat takes a lot longer than a traditional hat, but it's a lot more fun to wear.

I love the hat. How do I adapt the size to fit my 2 year old granddaughter? Or do you have another Christmas hat pattern for children? Thanks.
I don’t have a kids’ sized hat like this one (yet, anyway) but usually 2-year-olds have around 18-inch heads (they can vary widely so you might want to measure). Given the gauge (assuming you got the same), to make a hat 18 inches around you’d need 76 stitches (it needs to divide by four for the ribbing to work).
Then you could decrease more quickly so the part around the top of her head isn’t so bulky (if you want) and make it as long as you like. Have fun!
