What's Your Favorite Yarn Weight?

Wednesday July 16, 2008
I know it's not really sophisticated, but I love knitting with fat yarn. I love the instant (or near instant) gratification of knitting with thick yarn on fat needles, being able to finish a sweater in a week or less.

I am tempted to write that, if given the choice, I'd never knit with anything below medium weight, but then I'd only have huge socks (not that there's anything wrong with that).

So while I see the need for and can even enjoy knitting with many different weights of yarn, I do have my preferences. I wonder if you do, too? Let us know by answering the poll below, and maybe sharing a story about your favorite type of yarn.

I am just the opposite - I love fine yarns & almost never knit anything heavier than DK - partly because I mostly knit socks & sweaters etc for the grands - oldest is 6.

I adore skinny yarns. There’s not the instant gratification while working on the project, but usually they feel so much softer and smoother and the drape of the finished item is better to me. Besides, if the projects are over too soon, I have to run out and buy more yarn.

I like lighter weight yarns the best most of the time. That might be because I live in the south and only get to wear a heavy sweater for about 2 weeks a year if I’m lucky.

It all depends the season. Fine or superfine in the warmer months and heavier yarns in the cooler months.

I like worsted weight yarn best, it knits up quite fast and is softer than buly yarn.

I love DK (light worsted). It’s versatile. I can do fairisle with it or just plain knitting. It’s more comfortable to wear in a wider range of temperatures than worsted, but it’s faster gratification than using lighter weights. To me, it’s the best of all knitting worlds. I wish nice DKs were more easily obtained where I live.
