Knitting in the News: All About Charities

Tuesday July 15, 2008
All the news I managed to find this week has to do with knitting with a charitable twist. First off, knitters in Grand Blanc, Michigan are knitting helmet liners to help Marines keep warm on cold nights in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere. The liners (you can find a pattern here) will be donated to the Knitting for Marines program of the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

Second, the Salem News (that's Massachusetts) profiles a woman who recently died who was known for her knitting. Not only did she knit her husband's socks (and matching socks and sweaters that her kids, naturally, hated), she was known for knitting Christmas stockings, as many as two a week for years, her family reports. Those stockings and Alice Famico-Kenney's other handiwork stand as lasting reminders of her love; something I think we all hope for as knitters.

Finally, a group of knitters in Bonita Springs, Florida, is taking old clothing, cutting it into strips and knitting handbags and hats that will later be sold. The business is supported by Catholic Charities, which saw the need for another way to provide assistance to the growing number of people coming to them seeking food, clothing and other help. If you're in the area you can donate clothing, fabric, or your knitting or crochet skills.
