Would You Knit a Dress?

Wednesday July 9, 2008
After yesterday's story about the woman who knit her own wedding dress, I'm wondering if any of you have knit dresses, or would like to knit dresses.

Maybe it's just because I've never done it that it seems like such an amazing amount of work and a scarier proposition than, say, knitting a sweater.

If you knit your own wedding dress, or a similarly intricate dress, I'd love to hear about that, too.

I thought it might be interesting to Google “knitted wedding dress”. Boy was I right! The first hit was the most fascinating. Check it out at http://www.castoff.info/wedding.asp There are pictures. Lots of them. What I really liked was the picture of the bride and groom leaving the church under a (tunnel?) of crossed knitting needles with cast-on stitches.

(2) Lisa says:

I knit a couple of dresses when I was lots younger (and thinner!). They were simple striped patterns with no defined waist, short sleeves, and a crew neck— sort of like an elongated crew neck sweater. They were pretty easy and actually looked great. Don’t be intimidated by the idea! It just SOUNDS hard.

Jody-those were some crazy pictures! Thanks for sharing!
I have a few patterns saved up, just never taken the plunge! Maybe I will…

Sorry, but that was one ugly dress.

(5) Katie says:

I didn’t knit my wedding dress, I crocheted it. And then, being a glutton for punishment, I crocheted my brother’s first wife’s wedding dress. Both of them unique.

(6) Pat says:

My friend knit a beautiful pink dress and every time she wore it someone would say “here comes the lady in that pink dress” Seems no one thought she had anything else to ware.

(7) Linda says:

I have not knitted and adult dress, but I did knit a dress for my daughter when she was 3 y.o. It had a matching sweater. I knitted both in emerald green yarn (in keeping with our Irish heritage). The dress was then passed along to other female children in the family and now is safely stored until she marries and begins her family.

(8) Bev says:

I said “no” I wouldn’t want to knit a dress. Many years again, I did knit a suit…jacket and skirt……..I really don’t think I got enough wear from it to make it worth the time you have to spend.

(9) Arline says:

I, like Bev said no to your survey,
I like Bev, many many years ago knitted a two piece sweater and skirt. I wore it once. Held on to it for many years but never wore it again. Took too much time to finish and once finished I didn’t like it anymore/

I also crocheted my wedding dress – it took two engagements! Still damp from blocking when I wore it to the wedding – only wore that one time, too…Got the pattern from a McCall’s Needlework Magazine leaflet, Bought the yarn one ball at a time – very glad yarn store owner held them for me so I didn’t have to switch dyelots..!

(11) Marion says:

Have crocheted dresses, suits (skirt & Jacket), and pant suits. Am newer to knitting but would certainly try to knit a dress if it was a style that suited my body shape or that of someone else that I wanted to make it for.

(12) Nancy says:

When I first started knitting, I knit two coats, a suit, a two piece dress and a lace dress, which I ended up wearing as my trousseau cloths. I was told I could knit anything, if I really wanted to make it.

(13) sandisnow says:

I’ve knit 3 dresses and a fully lined coat. I got plenty of wear out of all of them, especially the coat. I wore it for years and when I finally gave it away, it still looked practically brand new. And I made the coat when I was about 14 years old-many, many years ago.

(14) Judy B says:

I knit 2 dresses years ago and wore them often. They were quite comfortable. One was green and yellow and the other one was blue and beige. Loved them both.

(15) Lauren says:

I knit myself a couple of suits when I was younger and thinner, and I have an adorable dress pattern which I’d love to make if I didn’t have a strong suspicion that I would not look anything like the model in it. She is at least forty years younger and forty pounds thinner than I am.

(16) Sally says:

This conversation does take me back.Years ago, during my art school/bohemian days I was at school in London, Eng. We had NO money but life was good fun and three of us crocheted full length pencil slim skirts. We used fine cotton,no pattern. We just used our bodies to measure it. Mine was black. I was quite slim then and I felt like a million in it. All my friends borrowed it for ‘dressing up dates’. I put in an elastic waist so it fit them all. I lived in it. Can’t remember what happened to it.
I did little skirts with bib-apron fronts when my girls were small. I made them lie down on newspaper and drew around them to get the sizes!!!! Don’t do stuff like that anymore.A bit sad really.

(17) Pauline Snowden says:

I once bought a gorgeous knitted dress many years ago and it was stolen from me as at the time I had washed it and had to share a drying room, it was a burgundy chunky knit dress with long sleeves and fine silver thread knitted through, you see I am underweight and it made me look bigger!Basically I would describe it as an elongated jumper, I loved it, wish I could find someone to re-knit it for me as I am defo’ not a knitter, any ideas please?

(18) Liz says:

I would knit a dress if I could find a pattern. Does anyone have a great pattern for a dress…not too heavy? Size doesn’t scare me. I knit a coat and have worn it endlessly for the past 9 years. It looks as good as new.

(19) sandra says:

I am old enough to remember when knitted dresses had problems of keeping their shape and wavy hemlines. If I saw a pattern useing modern yarn, that was flattering to the “fuller figure” (used to be referred to as “matronly”) then yes, I would welcome the challenge of knitting a dress. So am off now to see what modern patterns I can find.

(20) Kathy says:

My Grandma made my Aunt’s wedding dress back in 1973. They had a winter wedding. The dress was knitted floor length tank style dress. The jacket-train was made out of hundreds of little medallion type crocheted rounds. It was absolutly beautiful. I then wore it a few years later.
