Knitting in the News: Knitting for fun and charity, plus the rise of crochet
Wednesday July 2, 2008
As usual there's plenty of news this week about people who are knitting for charity, with one British mum knitting more than 100 hats for babies in South Africa and kids at an Australia school learning to knit and providing blankets for the poor.
Kids and grownups who learned to knit from a reading specialist at a school in Greece (that's New York) have knit scarves for children in New York and Iraq, as well as hats for premature babies. In the summer they sew projects for the local Ronald McDonald House.
Sometimes knitting is just about the fun, as it is with the group from Portishead England that sits, knits and sips in a local pub.
And finally, we've been hearing for years about how knitting is the hot trend, but now it could be that crochet is gaining ground as well. Fashion designers are starting to incorporate crochet, and people can enjoy it for the retro look of granny squares or more modern styles.
