Bubbly Bobbles

BobblesAn array of bobbles. (c) Sarah E. White.
If you've never knit bobbles before, chances are you might be a little bit intimidated by them. If you're working on a pattern that even has instructions for them, those instructions sound pretty strange.

You may be wondering how it's possible to make five stitches out of one and what you're supposed to do with them once you get them.

The truth is bobbles are really pretty easy and fun to make, and there are several different ways to make them. Before you try them on a project, you might want to give each of the different methods a try on a swatch and see which one you like best before you start a big project.

I know of three ways to make bobbles: combining knits and yarn overs, knitting in the front and back of the same stitch several times, and combining knits and purls. Are there others you have seen? Which is your favorite?
