Do You Participate in Public Knitting Events?

Wednesday June 11, 2008
With Worldwide Knitting in Public Day fast approaching (this Saturday!) I've been wondering how many people participate in such events or are planning to participate in a local public knitting event this year.

While some of us love to take out knitting wherever we go, some are more shy about their craft. Where do you fall on the spectrum? And if you've got a great public knitting story to share, I'd love to hear about it, here or in the forums.

(1) Debbie says:

I knit at meetings, on the bus to and from work, on airplanes etc. I am a little hyperactive and knitting helps me stay focused when I have to sit still for long. Plus I now have a beautiful new Boutique style sweater for summer to show for all the hours commuting to work this spring!

(2) Lynn says:

I knit in the doctor’s and dentist’s waiting rooms, but invariably as soon as I get started they call my name!

Several weeks ago a family member had outpatient surgery and I was in the waiting room for a good part of the day. I finished one sock and half of another one!

(3) Dottie says:

I have participated in Civil War Living History for 18 years and during that time I have used knitting as part of my persona. I have knitted in museums,at battlefields, on the streets, in parks under trees and in the laundryroom at Ft. Clinch State Park, FL. I have knitted several shawls, socks, a cap and I am now in the process of knitting cabled sleeves. It is a lot of fun dealing with the public at these events. One of the other ladies usually spins at the same time and we explain how the process begins and the end result and the work that it takes to make a garment.

(4) Kathleen says:

I knit in public all the time, but I have never participated in an organized Knit-Out. As a matter of fact, I can remember only a few times when I have ever knit along side another knitter. I bet it is a lot of fun, and a real education! (I teach knitting and crochet lessons at school, but that’s not quite the same.)

(5) Susan says:

Love to knit, but hard to do in the summer heat and humidity here in Lower Alabama, but yes, I will take my knitting wherever and whenever. This Saturday, I will be at a Habit for Humanity build, will have my knitting there during lunch break!

(6) Sindy says:

I am desperately trying to hook up with a knitting group. I have been lurking around Ravelry which has lots of comments about local knitting groups but I haven’t managed to meet up with them yet.

I am going to participate in public knitting tomorrow, June 14. This is my first time and am looking forward to it. I knit in public by myself all the time. Dr’s office, baseball games, etc.

(8) Theresa says:

I knit in public on a regular basis. This year for KIP day I was at the IWannaKnit Retreat in Shipshewana IN which was held in a public forum. We had great fun. I was knitting in the airport waiting for my husband’s late flight a few weeks ago and attracted the attention of a teen girl who watched over my shoulder for about half an hour.

(9) Katie says:

I knit in public all the time, but I have never been part of a public knitting event. I would like to do that. I encourage people to bring knitting (or crocheting or whatever) to wrestling meets and hospital waiting rooms. I recently knit a pair of sox while my mom was in the hospital having heart surgery. The sox kept my hands busy and I had less time to worry about how she was doing. The sox will be heading for Afghanistan with my soldier son in a few weeks.

Thank you for your response on the veil stitch. The pictures and diagram have helped me greatly. They were very clear. And I will be looking for the book. But it is nice to know that I have Sarah at about.com
Oh. After I was sending the request I saw I had misnamed the online company I bought the pattern from…it was Vintage Vault.
Thank you again. Christine
