Part of a stash afghan. (c) Sarah E. White.
I love making
stash-busting afghans, or really any kind of project that uses up those small bits of yarn that are left over from other projects. For the past couple of days I've been working on a
kid-sized stashaghan, made mostly of leftover bits from my book, which has been a lot of fun to work on.
It's really important to be able to clear out those extra bits from time to time -- it makes room for more new yarn!
Do you enjoy stash-busting projects? I'd love to hear what you do with all the extra odds and ends you have in your yarn stashes.

I just started a stash afghan last week! I have a ton of worsted weight yarns, probably enough to make two or three. For the first one, I’m using the Moss Stitch Lap Afghan pattern.
I usually make afghans, too. i also save small bits to use to add a little zip to knitted hatbrims and scarves, or to embroider or knit in patterns on other knitted items. I also give them away to my kids, grandkids and friends for art projects and scrapbooking. My grandkids like to spool knit and they use some bits as well.
I made a scarf last year & a friend saw me knitting & asked if she could have it–I just made a very plain, thick-ribbed scarf, and changed colors haphazardly, some thin stripes, some not, & very multi-colord. It actually looked great & she loves it–& I got rid of many tiny balls of yarn!
I’m thinking of trying a scarf next — some of my “oddballs” are pretty large so I could probably do a couple afghans, some scarves, a hat or two…
I make baby hats (especially the small ones for the premature babies) and donate them to the local hospital.
Afghans aren’t my thing, but I “thin my stash” by donating lots of leftover yarn and even whole skeins to a local women’s homeless shelter. They are so grateful and it makes me so happy. They ask for more!
I’m working on a fair isle sweater (original pattern) for me…some of the yarn is from the stash of a deceased friend of a friend, but most of it is mine. Surprising how much blue, purple and green yarn I have in fingering and sport weight. When it’s done I’ll try to figure out how to put up a photo.
