Charity Spotlight: ChemoCaps

Monday May 5, 2008
ChemoCaps was founded in memory of Heather Spoll, who died of cancer in 2000 at the age of 25. She was an avid knitter, and her mother started the organization to provide warm, soft hats to cancer patients in her memory.

ChemoCaps encourages knitters to work locally with their own hospitals and hospice centers to distribute their homemade caps. Knitters (and crocheters, of course) can work individually or form their own chapters, which gives groups the right to use the ChemoCaps logo and patterns.

Whether you work as an affiliate of ChemoCaps or just make some caps on your own to donate to a cancer treatment center, this small gesture can make a big difference in how someone who has lost her (or his) hair because of cancer treatment feels.

I am a 15 year cancer survivor. I went thru chemo from September to the end of February (in WI) in 1993. When you lose your hair, your scalp is very sensitive and the skin “hurts”. I was very cold all the time. I found 2 super soft stocking caps at the grocery store of all places and wore them to bed at night. If you make caps, please use the softest yarn you can find and knit them in the round so there is no seam. God bless all who knit for charity!

I have been doing this since I started knitting… I also knit preemie caps and drop them off at local hospitals… I have found that my local hospitals and nursing homes LOVE my knit donations! Great blog!!!

I made a chemo cap from fancy fur-bright turquise with multi-colored pom-poms in the “fur”. It was the hit of the hospital and my lovely friend who wore it. The fancy fur was soft on her scalp,,,also made a scarf to match.
