I really love Charlene Schurch's books, Sensational Knitted Socks and More Sensational Knitted Socks. These books are great for people who want a basic formula for different kinds of knit socks, but still the freedom to design their own socks by choosing the pattern stitch they want to use.

Schurch was recently featured on the Knit Picks podcast, which I thought you all would enjoy. They talk about the virtues of different kinds of needles for sock knitting, how to get double-pointed needles on an airplane and why socks are great projects for people with little patience, among other issues.
