Too Many Projects?
Wednesday February 20, 2008
This week I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed by trying to finish projects. I have four projects that are in the near-finished stage (I guess that's really three, because I just finished one before I sat to write this) and it's making me feel a little frantic.
That's not to mention the box of Christmas projects that never got done before the holidays, or the basket full of partly done things, or the bags of things I really need to rip out and try again.
All this has me thinking: is there such a thing as too many projects going on at once? Do you know how many in progress projects you have now, or what your all-time high is? Maybe you always finish a project before you move on to the next. (If you do, I'd love to know how you do it.

- Yes, and I'm there right now.
- Yes, and I've been there in the past.
- Yes, but I try to keep my numbers under control.
- Maybe for other people, but not for me.
- No way!
- Some other answer.

oh geeesh! do we HAVE to talk about this? ~grin~ let’s see: there’s the baby blanket beside my chair that’s about 1/3 finished, my mom’s sweater in the bedroom - only the front half-done on that … the two sweaters for charity in the closet - i’m probably never going to finish that striped one and i should frog it … my mittens … my aunt’s slippers .. oh MY! please excuse me now: I HAVE TO GO KNIT!!!!
Let’s see, I have always have socks in progress, they’re good to tuck into my bag and take along anywhere; there’s the felted bag that’s been on needles for over a year, and the sweater I’m working on now. I want to finish it before warm weather so I need to stop typing and go knit!!
I used to have several projects going at once. Late last year, I decided that it wasn’t productive, so I switched gears and only do one project at a time. I try to very sizes so after a long project, I might work on a dishcloth just to get something done! I have a blanket for a queen sized bed I’m working in pieces. To avoid burn out, I consider each “piece” a project so I can switch to something else. So far so good. Now if I could only control the project inflow…
Well, let me see…there is the green sweater I’ve started over three times because I can’t find a pattern that pleases me with that yarn, the hat that’s been on circular needles for over a year because I can’t wrap my brain around short rows no matter how many times I’ve read the directions, the countless pairs of socks I have attempted to knit that only have one sock…and the list go on and I keep buying yarn! There must be a recessive gene there somewhere!
Always have at least 6 projects going on… two in my chair in the living room, two in the car (have been known to knit during traffic jams), two in my tote bag if I have to wait. Do finish the knitting and felting…now have a slew of them to sew in linings (they are felted purses mostly). Love it! Keeps me out of the bars, I always say!!!
I have found that having different kinds of projects going is a good thing. Some projects can not be done as a passenger in a car, some are boring and good to do when you are with other people visiting. One thing to think about is not to beat yourself up, it is February, make decisions about what you already have going, finish a project with a person in mind for next Christmas. The sox that are not your thing, pull them out and do something else with your time and that yarn, the same with the sweaters. This is suppose to be fun and rewarding, make it easier on yourself.
I have like 7 or 8 projects going right now, and I feel like I need another one!
I only have three afghans and two sweaters going right now. I am ready to get a few more projects on needles since everything is getting too far along to be labeled “carry-around” anymore. I have several pair of socks to do, hats, mittens, bags, the list never ends. So I will probably get several things started soon. I am much better at starting projects than at finishing them and have to make myself get things done before I start too many new things.
I have always been a one project at a time girl, but I’m trying to get into the 2 projects… one for the couch, one for my purse… kind of girl. My trouble is though, that I end up liking one more than the other and I have to carry around a sweater or a blanket, or I end up knitting washrags & scarves on the couch…. Once I get hooked on a project, I find it hard to put it down, much like a good book!
Yes there is such a thing as “too many projects going on at once.” I had to learn to calm down and have no more than 3 going on. It was becoming stressful and knitting was feeling like another chore. With less knitting projects on my needles, it just makes me feel better.
