Sock Zen

Monday October 8, 2007
Zen of SocksZen of Socks by Society Socks.
I'm working on instructions and a photo tutorial for a sort of "training sock" to help all those people who are a little afraid of knitting socks, and it has occurred to me that it really helps if you can watch someone make a sock when you are learning to knit socks.

Not everyone knows a sock knitter or can take a class to learn how to knit socks, but most everyone has access to a DVD player or computer that can play a sock knitting DVD.

I recently had a chance to look at Society Socks' The Zen of Socks DVD, which includes an hour and 40 minutes of instruction in everything from casting on and knitting the leg to knitting the heel flap, turning the heel, shaping the gusset and toes and finishing a sock.

If you're one of those people who really needs to see something to understand it, an instructional DVD like this can be a big help. It could be just the push you need to get over the fear of knitting socks and into the Zen of socks.

I declared 2007 to be my Year of The Sock and taught myself (with some help over the phone from friend Barb and my mom) to knit socks. I am on my 8th pair since January! Learning to knit socks gave me the courage to tackle my first sweater too and now I am on my second one. To all who are afraid to knit socks, all I can say is DO IT!! Its liberating to confront the fear and make your first pair! And not as hard as we thought it was.

When I was first learning how to knit socks, I wasn’t sure about what I was doing, so I made sure that I had two sets of needles, and would do one set of cuffs, then the other, and so on. This way when I was doing the “tricky bits” I would do one, then immediately do the other. This way I was more likely to do the same thing on one sock as the other. I am not great at making notes as I go along. Also, make some little socks, then the processes that you have to learn are “closer together”.
