Knitting Superhero

Wednesday June 20, 2007
There are lots of cool things you can do with needles and yarn. Artist Mark Newport uses his stitches to make superhero costumes reminiscent of footed pajamas.

These fun designs, which include famous superheroes like Captain America and Batman and unknowns like Every-Any-No Man (made from remnants in a rainbow of colors) are currently part of a show in Richmond, Virginia. Called "Transformer," the show looks at different ways people change themselves, from hair cutting to dressing up as superheroes.

Newport says he made his first costume out of cheap acrylic yarn because that's what his mother used to knit him sweaters when he was young. He learned to knit from his grandmother and has used comic books in other art pieces, including a quilt made from comic book pages and embroidered comic book covers.

Which goes to prove that knitting isn't just for women--it's also for men. And superheroes.
