How Much of Your Knitting is for Yourself?

Wednesday April 25, 2007
Knitters are known for being incredibly generous people. We're willing to give of our time and the fruits of our needles to charities and to countless children and grandchildren in our families and the families of friends and coworkers.

I've heard a lot of knitters lately say that they never knit for themselves or almost never knit for themselves, and I've been wondering how widespread this phenomenon is. Do you knit a lot for yourself, or are you more interested in knitting for others? There's no judgment in this question, just curiosity.

Bravo for this poll! I’ve only been knitting for about 2 years but found quickly that I love making beanies, baby/preemie hats, and Warm Up America squares for donation.

Good Question!

i belong to a group called blankets for america. we’re a small online group that formed about three years ago … and we’ve donated over a thousand knitted, crocheted and quilted blankets to homeless shelters, hospitals, children’s centers and - especially - organizations on Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. I also love to knit for my family … I’ve been knitting for 30 years and the only thing I’ve ever made for myself is a hat! ~grin~ i just love making things for others … it satisfies my creative side and my soul at the same time.
great question! thanks for asking!

Most of my knitting is for me. Most, if not all, of the rest of my life is for others. Knitting is what I do for me. The time i spend knitting is also for me. When the kids are in bed and the day is done I relax and knit. I have been knitting for about 10 years and for the first 5 years everything I knit was for others. Then I knit myself a shawl. It was so rewarding, so satisfying, I suddenly realize how I had been ignoring my needs. I have a husband, family, job and give a lot of time to volinteering.

Knitting is for me.

(4) Linda says:

I’ve given up knitting for ME. When I’ve done something for myself I end up giving it to someone.

I have been knitting for 41 years. The first thing I made was for me, seems everything else has been for everyone else. Now that I have 4 kids, I will sometimes start a project intended for someone else, and they will put claim to it…lol…this is rewarding in itself, that they want what I am making…I also knit for special orders, and am now going to check out the donation sites, I never thought of that before, sometimes it is fun to just sit and knit a square…

I love to knit and sometimes I actually do it for myself. I get so much pleasure from the process though that it doesn’t really bother me that I get very little of what I create.
