Knitting Problems Happen

Thursday October 19, 2006
No matter how experienced you are as a knitter, there somes a time when you'll just mess up. It could be something as simple as changing a knit stitch for a purl stitch or something a little more hairy, like skipping a row in a pattern, using the wrong color or increasing or decreasing at the wrong time.

When something like this happens to you, you need to know, first, that things like this happen to everyone. Perfection is not the realm of humanity. We are built for making mistakes.

Second, you need to know that any knitting mistake you make can be fixed. You might not like the solution if it means ripping out a lot of work, but you'll be a lot happier if you fix the problem when you notice it instead of letting it go and creating a garment that will drive you crazy because it isn't "right."

When you have one of those less-than-perfect knitting days, check out our article on fixing mistakes in your knitting. You can fix any problem with enough patience and a smile.

I am a first time knitter and I messed up and I had no idea why. I called my teacher who is 8 hours away and she tried to help. This website helped me learn how to “tink” and I can continue on.

Somehow, no matter how carefull I am, I occassionally add a stitch. Like, if I start with 17, many rows later I might have 21. It is driving me mad because it seems like I’m doing evrything right.
Thank, Marcia
